THE BEGINNING

In 1919, Conrad Hilton entered the hotel industry with his first hotel in Cisco, Texas. Initially, he planned to buy a bank, but the negotiations lasted too long, he changed his mind and bought the local 40-room The Mobley hotel. A few years later, he continued to buy some other hotels in Texas.

In 1925, he opened the Hilton Dallas, the first hotel under the Hilton brand. This hotel had elevators, laundry shoots and non-customer facilities that are built along the west side of the building so that guest rooms are not affected by the harsh Dallas summer sun, because at that time, air conditioning were not yet used. Two years later, the Waco Hilton opened and it was the first Hilton to have cold running water and air conditioning in the public areas.

Under the leadership of Conrad Hilton, the company thrived and pioneered many services and facilities of the hotel industry. In 1947, the Roosevelt Hilton Hotel in New York was the first hotel to install televisions in guest rooms. A year later, Hilton introduced the Inter-Hilton Hotel Reservation System, the multi-hotel reservation system and the beginning of today’s modern reservation system. Hilton also pioneered the airport hotel concept with the Hilton San Francisco Airport (1959).
1949 marked Hilton’s move outside of the US with the Caribbean Hilton Hotel in Puerto Rico and the introduction of Hilton International. In the same year, Conrad Hilton acquired the Waldorf Astoria, the hotel he had long-standing ambition to own. Although the Waldorf Astoria was not a big hotel compared to the hotels he owns, it is where the biggest conventions, the biggest auto and fashion shows were held, where many powerful figures of that time made their homes away from home.

In 1954, Hilton made the largest real estate deal in history with the acquisition of the Statler Hotel chain for 111 million USD. Hilton was also the first upscale lodging company to develop the concept of hotel franchising when it began franchising hotels in the US in 1965.

The company continuously grew and expanded its hotel portfolio over the following years. In 2013, Hilton returned to the New York Stock Exchange. The company’s IPO raised 2.35 billion USD and was the largest IPO ever for a hotel.

With a history of more than 100 years of found and development, Hilton has become one of the largest and fastest-growing hotel companies in the world, with more than 6,800 hotels under 18 brands in 122 countries around the globe.
