On November 28, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and People’s Committee of Quang Nam Province organized the National Conference on Tourism 2020 in Hoi An (Quang Nam) with the theme “Connection, action and development”.
According to Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Van Hung, Vietnam’s tourism had severe loss due to the effects of the Covid-19. According to forecasts, by the end of 2020, international tourist arrivals to Vietnam in 2020 are estimated at only 3.7 million, which decreased 80% compared to 2019, and about 95% of international travel agents have shutdown operating. Occupancy rates of many hotels in big cities are only 10-15% and many hotels had to close down. The total loss of tourism in the whole country amounted to 530 trillion VND (about 23 billion USD).
At the conference, Deputy Minister Nguyen Van Hung proposed and consulted on 4 groups of solutions to recover the tourism industry, including restructuring the tourist market; developing new products and services, diversifying products and improving product quality suitable to each market; promoting investment cooperation and regional linkages among localities and destinations in tourism product development; digital transformation in market research, database and tourism promotion.
Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam suggested the tourism industry to implement many solutions, in which paying attention to restructure the market towards focusing on domestic tourists; ensure safety when facing Covid-19. The Deputy Prime Minister also suggested that the tourism industry should implement digital transformation soon, building a common platform to exploit, such as digitalizing heritage and natural resources, strengthening linkages and cooperation to develop together.
He said: “The tourism industry should consider this pandemic as the necessary break time to reassess the whole industry, thereby offering effective and appropriate investment solutions.”
