IHG Hotels & Resorts is one of the world’s leading hotel groups for decades, but few people know that it started out as a brewery in the UK. In 1777, William Bass founded a brewery named after him in Burton-on-Trent. Bass brewery gradually became the UK’s largest brewer company during the 18th to 20th centuries.
Around the mid-twentieth century, many hotel brands were introduced and thrived, such as InterContinental®, Holiday Inn, Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants, Crowne Plaza. At that time, Holiday Inn was a pioneer hotel brand in franchising, launched Holidex – the world’s first computerised hotel reservation system and the hotel industry’s first loyalty program. In 1965, Holiday Inn was the largest hotel brand in the world with 300,000 rooms.
Capturing the growth of the hotel market, Bass acquired Holiday Inn in 1988, creating a strong transformation for the brewery thanks to Holiday Inn’s strong foundation. In 1989, the UK tightened regulations for brewers, Bass also began to focus more on the hotel segment, gradually reducing brewery production until completely selling his brewery in 2000.
In the 1990s, Bass acquired many other hotel brands and companies such as InterContinental®, Candlewood Suites, Southern Pacific Hotels Corporation, Bristol Hotels & Resorts Inc. At the same time, the company also launched many new brands such as Holiday Inn Express, Staybridge Suites® by Holiday Inn.
The company changed its name once in 2001 to Six Continents. In 2003, Six Continents split into two independent companies, including InterContinental Hotels Group plc (IHG) and another retail business.
IHG continues its strong development momentum with acquisitions and launches of various hotel brands, expanding into many markets around the world, becoming a global hospitality brand. In 2021, the brand changed its name again to IHG Hotels & Resorts.
It is the brand promise of IHG Hotels & Resorts of creating rich and memorable experiences while recognizing, respecting, and caring for everyone, not just guests, hotel owners, colleagues, and partners, but it also means doing right for the world around.
